In a hammer-on you sound a higher note by striking the string with a fretting-hand finger. In a pull-off you sound a lower one by pulling the string sideways as you lift the finger. Only the first note is picked. The result is a flowing sound: legato.
Step 1 of 5 · Hammer-on
Fret the 5th fret of the third string with your index finger and pick it. Without picking again, bring your ring finger down firmly on the 7th fret, right behind the fret wire. The second note should sound almost as loud as the first.
