Building a scale · Animation

The animation builds the C major scale step by step. Each new note appears on the fretboard, sounds, and is labelled with the kind of step that separates it from the previous one: whole or half. At the end you see the full pattern, whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half, which defines every major scale.

Building the major scale · Step 1 of 8

Starting on C and following W–W–H–W–W–W–H gives the major scale. From another starting note, the same pattern gives that note's major scale.

How to use it

Play it once all the way through, then go one step at a time with the step button.
Before each step, try to guess whether the next one will be a whole or a half step.
Repeat the same pattern from another note on your guitar, along a single string: it's the best proof you've got it.
Check your scale in the scale explorer.
